The new PCI management adapters use the fifth generation of IBM's industry-leading token-ring chip technology and offer an unmatched combination of features, performance and value for token-ring customers. With an array of leading manageability features, these three new adapters enable corporate IT managers to drive down their total cost of system and network ownership while preserving their investment in proven token-ring technology. These adapters are backwards-compatible to older adapters, facilitating a smooth migration to the new cards. These device drivers also operate with the new IBM 16/4 Token-Ring CardBus Adapter, allowing a common driver to be deployed across desktop, server and mobile platforms.

All of the new adapters offer a number of manageability functions designed to enable more efficient management of large networked PC installations. With support for Wake on LAN, PXE-compliant remote boot and remote unattended installation, systems can be deployed consistently and maintained during non-use hours. These PCI management adapters ship with a Tivoli Management Agent and support SNMP management and DMI 2.0 instrumentation, enabling system management with the leading applications. Installation is a breeze with Plug and Play. In addition, a new Windows-based diagnostic tool eases problem determination. With the introduction of these innovative adapters, IBM continues to deliver the latest industry features to its family of customer-proven token-ring networking adapters.

The High-Speed 100/16/4 Token-Ring PCI Management Adapter has been developed and tested to work in IBM and non-IBM desktop and server PC systems. It conforms to the PCI 2.2 bus standard, IEEE 802.5 Token-Ring standard and supports the latest versions of all major operating environments. This adapter received the Microsoft PC99 logo, is Novell NetWare-certified and currently complies with the Wired for Management 2.0 specifications.

The 16/4 Token-Ring Low Profile PCI Management Adapter is designed for use in IBM's new low-profile desktop systems, allowing proven token-ring connectivity for these new systems. This low-profile adapter is supported in selected operating systems, including Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0® and Windows 98 SE.

The IBM 16/4 Token-Ring PCI Management Adapter offers outstanding performance, low power consumption, and proven reliability. The PCI management adapter has also been developed and tested to work in IBM and non-IBM desktop and server PC systems. It conforms to the PCI 2.2 bus standard and IEEE 802.5 Token-Ring standard, and supports all the latest versions of all major operating environments. The 16/4 Token-Ring PCI Management Adapter supports the PCI Hot Plug and Redundant NIC Quick Failover, which enhances server network reliability and maintainability.

The PCI Management Adapter (34L5001) supports both IBM Wake on LAN (wakes a machine from a cold power-off state using a magic packet) and Microsoft OnNow (ACPI). For these features to work, the adapter must be installed in a PCI 2.2-compliant machine. This means that the machine must implement the PCI bus PME pin, and provide 3 V auxiliary through the PCI connector. The PCI Management Adapter provides no extra connectors for hooking up Wake on LAN through separate Wake on LAN cables. Once a machine is awakened remotely through Wake on LAN, the machine is free to boot up whatever operating system is installed on the hard drive

The IBM 16/4 Token-Ring PCI Adapter 2 with Wake on LAN is the industry's first token-ring adapter to offer IBM/Intel Alert on LAN technology. This allows token-ring network administrators to manage their PCs in addition to their networks. This adapter also offers IBM's legacy Wake on LAN technology and conforms to the Microsoft OnNow specification. The Wake on LAN adapter offers unparalleled manageability with its innovative Alert on LAN technology, allowing two-way communication between network management applications and the adapter. Not only is the network manager able to "wake up" the adapter (for example, to download software), but the adapter also informs the manager of changes to the status of the system even when the system is powered off. This standards-based solution can provide notification when a system is tampered with or when it is experiencing a problem. The IBM 16/4 Token-Ring PCI Adapter 2 with Wake on LAN is recommended for your token-ring network if you are concerned about the Total Cost of Ownership and need the best available management features for your client and server machines. If you're looking for the single best adapter to use in your clients and servers, this is it.

Ease of installation and use
Installing our token-ring adapters is fast and easy.
  • Automatic adapter installation with Plug and Play card services.
  • Customized token-ring network configuration using LANAID, the installation tool included with the adapter—no switches to set.

To help eliminate conflicts with existing devices, we provide flexible configuration options with several interrupts and more I/O addresses to choose from. The LANAID tool automates configuration and installation of drivers and protocols for selected IBM token-ring adapters.

Automatic ring-speed detection and selection
Using IBM token ring is even easier because the entire family of adapters automatically detects the current ring speed—even when the speed is selected manually. This feature prevents insertions into the ring at the wrong speed. And if you select the automatic ring-speed selection, these adapters adjust their speed to the correct ring speed—even when you're connected to speed-sensing hubs. Automatic ring-speed detection simplifies installation and eliminates network disruptions caused by incorrect adapter ring speeds.

Help in troubleshooting problems
As an aid to quick and easy troubleshooting without disrupting the operation of your network, LEDs on our ISA and PCI adapters provide status on the adapter and the ring. All of these features add up to a significant reduction in the time, cost and complexity of installation and use.
