Documents
AIW documents are available in different online formats.
Most are available from the
AIW ftp site or the OS/390 Internet Library.
Many of these documents are also available
on various CD-ROMs associated with particular products that implement
these technologies and architectures.

- Many of these documents are available from the
AIW FTP
site.
The table entry indicates some of the available formats.
To view PDF files,
get Adobe® Reader®.
The FTP server on ftp.software.ibm.com/networking has several document
repositories, including AIW,
APPC/APPN, and CIW, all
described below.
- Most of these documents can be viewed
and searched online via the IBM BookManager BookServer
on the OS/390 Internet
Library, specifically for this table, the
Networking Architectures Overview Bookshelf.
- The DLSw standard and several of
the APPN and DLSw MIBs are published as
IETF RFCs.
If there is an RFC listed in this table, it is the
latest, "official" version of the document. Other entries
are the official AIW architecture document only if there is no RFC.
-
The IBM Publcations Center also has online documents. Some documents here
can be viewed if you have a subscription, and others are available to
the general public.

The AIW maintains a file server, ftp.software.ibm.com/networking, for
a document library of materials contributed by its members. This
library includes documents which describe the architecture of record,
proposed extensions to the architecture, meeting minutes, member lists,
mail logs for the electronic mail exploders, and much more.
You can use anonymous FTP to get these materials from the
/pub/standards/aiw directory. You can also preview these
materials here.
ftp.software.ibm.com/networking also has CIW materials of interest.
You can use anonymous FTP to get these materials from the
/pub/standards/ciw directory. You can also preview these
materials here.
SNA over FrameRelay white paper (PDF format)
The joint Frame Relay Forum/AIW white paper is now available at the
AIW FTP and
Frame Relay Forum Web sites.
Quoting from the white paper's Introduction,
This white paper is intended to assist those who wish to consider
Frame Relay as a transmission protocol for their SNA data traffic. The document
gives an overview of the issues to be considered and decisions to be made. The
intent of the document is to provide a high level overview that can be used as
a starting point to focus on issues of particular concern ... the paper gives
an overview of the SNA market and a brief history of the SNA technologies. The
paper briefly describes each of the SNA technologies highlighting the
distinguishing features. The document then goes through the parts of SNA that
interact with frame relay and the standards formats used to transport SNA over
frame relay. Finally, the document discusses the issues significant to SNA
traffic and how these can be addressed when using frame relay.
To look at a particular online document, you can use the tables on
the this page. This page should be complete, but if you don't find an
online document there, you should also search the online libraries
themselves for the particular title of interest.
Most of the documents are published using
IBM BookManager, so they
may be available in several different formats. There are Web sites,
such as the IBM Networking, IBM OS/390 Internet Library, and IBMLink
sites, which have installed IBM BookManager BookServer, so that
BookManager document scan be viewed using a Web browser.
Have you ever stared at your bookshelf stocked with more than a
dozen AIW meeting binders and tried to remember which handout or
document was in which binder? Help has arrived in the form of the
AIW session index page.
Thanks go to Jim Cobban of Nortel for providing this index.
